Okay, so let’s dive into this week’s episode, which is all about the things that are holding you back in moving your business forward. And I’ve got a list of questions at the very end that I want you to journal through so that you can stop holding yourself back.
Okay, so number one, you are playing small. What’s holding you back from playing bigger? What fears are in your way? Do you passionately believe in what you’ve created? Why are you playing small? If you’re playing small? What’s preventing you from playing bigger? I know that that sometimes is easier said than done. And I know for myself personally, I have kept myself small because of fear of rejection and fear of critics, and fear of crazy ninja keyboard warriors. And data is what has kept me back. That is what has held me back because of those fears. And are they rational? Yeah, they’re rational. I don’t like confrontation. I don’t like being attacked. I don’t think anybody in this world appreciates those things. But it has held me back in business. It has kept me from taking giant leaps forward. And I’m doing it to myself. So that is one thing that’s holding you back or might be holding you back. You’re playing small.
Number two, you aren’t sure of next steps. And I get that the unknown is the unknown. We don’t know what we don’t know as well. So what goal are you working towards? What will it take to get to that goal? And what are the logical next steps? If we were to break down your goal, what are the logical next steps because it’s important that we take action that we implement on these goals? But if you’re not sure of next steps, let’s start with what is the goal? Okay, now that you’ve got the goal, what will it take to get there? What steps will it take to get there? What is logical for you to get there. So that might be holding you back? Because you’re not sure of those next steps. If you can get clear on what those next steps are, then you can create a plan to take action and implement to get to that goal.
Number three, you’re doing the same thing on repeat and expecting different results. So I have to ask, if you couldn’t fail or if you knew you couldn’t fail, what would you be doing differently so that you can break out of that cycle of doing the same thing on repeat because you aren’t going to get a different result by doing the same thing over and over. You need to take time to create a list and then take giant leaps towards those things on your list. If you knew you couldn’t fail, what would you be doing? Create a list, figure out what that list is and then I want you To find the gumption and the courage to take giant leaps towards those things, and then keep taking more leaps towards those things. Because you need to do more giant leaping in your life. That is where magic is created. So what’s holding you back? Doing the same thing on repeat but expecting different results?
Number four, something that might be holding you back is instant gratification itis. I know that when we create something, we work really hard, and we put it out into the world. And then we just wait. I personally have been getting these feelings with my TikToks and Reels that my assistant is creating. It is literally like we had one that went semi-viral. So now my expectation is, is it going to go viral? Is it going to go viral? How many people have watched it? Refresh, refresh, refresh. We have to remember in business, we are running a marathon, not a sprint. I know. We all want it like right now, but that’s not realistic. And I know this is hard because we want it right now. We want those feel-good moments right now.
I also am having those or wanting and craving those instant gratification moments with my beta readers of my eBook. So my ebook is in beta mode right now, and I want the readers to read it within a 21 day period so I can get some feedback and make some changes because I want to put it out to the world. I’ve held myself back for so long, but now I’m anxious, and I want to get it out there. I want to share it, but now I’m waiting. And it’s hard. It’s hard to wait. But I have to remember: I’m running a marathon. I’m not sprinting. So we need to create a delayed satisfaction system. We need to work on everything with this type of mindset delayed satisfaction, which means we’re going to have to work ahead, even if it’s challenging for those of us that are professional procrastinators.
So here’s another example for you. I am with Sugar Creek, I’m currently working on creating some backyard dinner party packages where I will provide all of your tabletop, including some decor, plus I will provide a grazing board. And I will partner with a winery and a florist so that you have the whole kit and caboodle when you pick up or when we courier it to you. But this takes time. I have to plan it. I have to figure out what’s going to be included. I have to go out and create relationships with wineries and florists to see who might be also interested in partnering with me on this and what the costs are going to be etc., etc. It’s not something I can just do overnight. And I know that once I put it out there, I’m going to want that instant gratification. But again, this is a marathon. It’s not a sprint.
Same thing for Ivory+Ink. Ivory+Ink was created to help couples plan their wedding from the viewpoint of vendors on what we want them to know. Because what we want them to know is not what they’re currently out there searching on Google. Because what they don’t know, they don’t know. You can’t search for something on Google that you don’t know to search, right? So they are searching how to plan a wedding, how to create a wedding budget. Those are their problems that they’re looking to solve. I can help you do that, but I want to help you do that from a vendor’s perspective so that we don’t waste your time. We don’t have you waste your money. We find out what’s super important to you. That’s what really matters with a wedding, but that again takes time. I can’t have the feelings of instant gratification because I’m running a marathon. I’m not sprinting. We’re not sprinting. So this may be something else holding you back. Instant gratification itis. You have to change your mindset to the idea hasn’t failed. It’s gaining momentum. When you can make that switch in your mind that this slow-going marathon is legit, make that switch in your mind that your idea hasn’t failed. It’s gaining momentum. It’s working. You just have to let it actually do the work.
Number five, your past is still dictating your future. And again, this goes back to playing small. Your fears are holding you back. Your failures are holding you back. What if I told you What if I gave you permission to change your mindset to lessons and set a failure? How would that change you? So instead of what failures are holding you back? What lessons did you overcome? So that you can move forward. Instead of failing? We are learning lessons. That might be something holding you back. Your past dictating your future.
Number six, you don’t know what you really want. I recently had an episode – podcast number 325: How to find your dream life. If you don’t know what you really want, how are you ever going to get forward in your life, in your business with your goals? If you’re wishy-washy, how are you going to get somewhere? This is a perfect conversation from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland between Alice and the cat. Alice asked, “Would you tell me please which way I ought to go from here? The cat responds, “That depends a good deal on where you want to get to.” Alice replies, “I don’t care much where.” The cat responds, “Then it doesn’t matter which way you go.” And isn’t that so true? If we don’t know where we’re going, it doesn’t matter. The directions given to us, we won’t get there. We can take a left instead of a right because we don’t know where we’re actually going. So if you don’t know what you really want, how are you ever going to up-level? How are you ever going to get that thing you dream of? How are you ever going to find new clients book new business, gain revenue? This might be holding you back because you don’t know what you really want. So it’s time to decide where you actually want to go and get specific with it.
And number seven, you’re not starting because you’re waiting for that perfect moment. You’re waiting for yourself to feel ready. You’re going to have to rip that band-aid off because you’re not going to ever feel ready enough. You are not going to find that perfect moment. You got to rip the band-aid off and just do it. You’ve got to take action. Now. If you knew you couldn’t fail, what would you do next?
So I know I’ve been asking questions all through these seven things that may be holding you back. But I’ve got some more that I want you to ponder that I want you to journal through. What do you desire to improve upon? What do you need to do to next-level yourself? What fears are holding you back? What would excite you? What should you stop doing? Are you staying busy? Are you stuck in the busy? What’s missing? What’s missing to get you to where you want to be? What do you desire? What is the next big hairy, scary dream goal? If you knew you couldn’t fail, what would you be doing next? What is your big list? Maybe there’s three to five things. Write them down. And then let’s work on taking big leaps towards them. Let’s stop playing small. Let’s get real with what’s next in our steps. Let’s stop repeating the same thing on repeat but expecting different results. Let’s actually do what we need to be doing to get to our big scary hairy goals. Let’s shutter the instant gratification itis. Let’s let go of the past, so it stops dictating our future. Let’s decide on what we really want out of this life. And let’s rip that band-aid off because you’re not going to find that perfect moment to start. You’re not going to find that I feel ready now moment. You have to just do it. You just have to leap.
