Episode #324: Rolling Out Your Own Red Carpet
TAYLOR BRADFORD: You are listening to episode number 324 of the Boss Girl Creative podcast. Today, I’m talking about the importance of rolling out your own red carpet. On to the episode.
Hello, welcome to Episode 324. I’m your host, Taylor Bradford. Thank you so much for tuning in to this episode, which is all about rolling out your own red carpet, what that actually means, etcetera. Before I dive in, the Inner Circle membership is back on a waitlist. If you want to get yourself on the waitlist, go to bossgirlcreative.com/InnerCircle. What is involved in the Inner Circle membership: we have monthly live Q and A’s. We have a monthly business book club where we actually implement from the book we’re reading, and we actually spend time in the book. For example, we’re currently reading Girl on Fire, and we’re about to be in month four in this book because it’s important that what we read and what we learn, we actually take action on. So this isn’t ‘fly through a business book and move on to the next.’ This is actually diving deep into the books that we’re reading and taking action and implementing. We also have two co-working days each month. And we have a community that is absolutely made of beautiful humans that are constantly working on up-leveling themselves and their businesses. And it’s just something that you don’t want to miss out on. Doors will reopen back in December the first – actually December 1st. So get yourself on the waitlist if you want to be one of the first to know when the doors reopen or actually just a reminder that the doors are reopening so you can get yourself in there. Because I promise you, it’s not something you want to miss out on again. Get yourself on the waitlist. Go to bossgirlcreative.com/InnerCircle.
Okay, so what actually inspired today’s episode is the book Girl on Fire. And rolling out your own red carpet has been one of my mottos since I started blogging way back in 2008. And the reason is so important to me and is basically one of the foundations of Boss Girl Creative, rolling out your own red carpet, celebrating the fact that you are unconventional, celebrating the fact that you are a unicorn, celebrating the fact that you are the square peg trying to be in a round hole – actually; you don’t even need to try to be in the round hole – you won’t fit, and that’s okay, and that’s what we celebrate within Boss Girl Creative, being unconventional, being that business unicorn—rolling out your own red carpet. That is you doing things your own way because my business beliefs are that you get to set the rules because it’s your empire. I don’t think that business is one size fits all and so it is absolutely imperative that you roll out your own red carpet. Absolutely imperative. Because here is a myth: you must play by the rules to be successful. Absolutely not. I mean, let’s think about the greats of the world. The women greats of the world. Rosa Parks, Mother Teresa, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Anne Frank, Madonna, and Lady Gaga. They all push boundaries or pushed boundaries. They all did things their own way. They all had major impact on our culture and our society. Laurel Thatcher Ulrich said, “well-behaved women seldom make history.”
So when it comes to your career, roll out your own red carpet. You don’t have to pick just one thing and stick with it forever. Give yourself the opportunity to explore what lights your soul on fire. Take it from me. I’m a retired certified personal trainer. I’m a petroleum landman. I’m a former used motorcycle dealer. I’m a current used car dealer. I’m a landlord. I’m a commercial real estate investor. I’m a blogger. I’m an influencer. I’m a podcast host. I’m a YouTuber. I’m a soon-to-be book author. I’m a business mentor and coach. I’m an event designer. I’m an event stylist. I’m an interior decorator. I’m a soon-to-be event venue owner. I’m a specialty event rental business owner. I’m a soon-to-be public insurance adjuster. I’m an RV and boat storage operator, and I help my husband with his roofing business. I’m a woman who has created many different streams of income, and who knows what I’ll do next.
I’ve shifted, I’ve pivoted, I’ve done what I needed to do just to keep pushing forward. I’ve continued to roll out my own red carpet. You don’t have to stay in your lane. You know, I learned when I first started truly networking in the wedding industry, I saw one of my competitors step into the wedding planning side of things. And I saw the reaction they received by doing that, and they were kind of blacklisted by a lot of vendors because they stepped into somebody else’s lane. But really, why did it matter? There’s room for everybody. But watching them do that and get the backlash that they received really kept me from stepping into anybody else’s lane. But why? The root of it, why?
And this is what I’ve learned since then; you don’t have to stay in your own lane because that will keep you confined. That will keep you small. Don’t let fear hold you back. Don’t let others’ opinions hold you back. Their opinions don’t pay your bills. They don’t dictate your life. Be unconventional, be that square peg that won’t ever fit into that round hole. Celebrate your uniqueness. Don’t hide from it. So create your own lane and thrive. Be that multi-passionate unicorn, but you got to get serious about your passions in life. Figure out what’s most important and go from there.
So as I mentioned, we’re in the middle of the book Girl on Fire, and I love this particular exercise that’s inside the book. Make two lists – this is talking about prioritizing your passions- make two lists. Your first list should include all the things you love doing currently and the things you’d love to start doing someday. And then start a second list. Include the things that you know you want to take action on in the near future. These things should excite you. These things should make you feel ready to move forward. The secret to doing the things you truly want to do is in your execution. This is why I say over and over and over, we are really good at goal setting, but we truly suck in execution and implementation—unless it’s important. But here’s the thing, you’ve got to make it important. We have to make these things a priority. We have to prioritize our time and get rid of the things that are wasting it.
If you need help in doing this, you need to start time blocking what it is that you’re doing in your day. So start a list on a Monday and start recording all the things that you do, everything that you do, and how much time it took you to do it. This will help you zero in on your time wasters. I want you to start thinking about will this task lead to me making money? Will this task lead me to pushing my business forward? Can I offload this task to somebody else who has that superpower to do that thing so that I can do something else that will make me money or something else that will push my business forward?
Focus on the things that light you up. When you have that kind of passion for something, you will do everything in your power to succeed. And I’m talking everything. Don’t be scared to be yourself. That’s the only thing that makes you different than everyone else. You are not replicatable. You get to make your own rules. You get to do the things that make you feel good. Be consistent and lean into your passion. I didn’t get to be all of those things that I listed out because I was lazy or because I was scared, or because I was fearful. I have all of those labels because I am driven, and I am passionate about getting to the next level.
So, here are some questions I want you to answer for yourself. What’s something new you’ve been excited to explore, and what’s stopping you from doing that thing? Or those things? What would it take for you to just dive in and do it? What is holding you back? What positive things will come from you doing that thing, or those things? You have the superpower to roll out your own red carpet. I want you to think about the things that make you excited about, think about the things that you’re passionate about. Think about the things that give you purpose in your life, and I want you to explore them more. I want you to actually take action on implementing and exploring those things more. This is important because the secret, again, to doing the things you truly want to do is in the execution. That’s how you get to add a new label to yourself.
So now you have homework. How are you rolling out your own red carpet? How are you celebrating your uniqueness? How are you driving yourself forward? How are you expanding your business? Follow your passion, lean into it, take action, execute, implement all the things because you are you and no one else can be you.
