Episode #273: So you want to launch something?
TAYLOR BRADFORD: You’re listening to episode number 273 of the Boss Girl Creative podcast. Today I’m talking about how to launch a new idea. On to the episode.
I’m Taylor Bradford, host of the Boss Girl Creative podcast around these parts. I’m known for dropping truth bombs about how running a business isn’t one size fits all. I’m unconventional, a professional procrastinator, and a serial entrepreneur, I could wow you with the fact that I bought my first investment property at the age of 24 or that I made it into the Millionaire Club before I turned 40. However, that’s not why I’m here, or how I want to be defined. Being a small business owner of a variety of businesses, being in the trenches with you is why I’m here. If I can do this, so can you. If you feel like you’re a bit unconventional, if you are a fellow procrastinator, or if you’re just tired of being shoved into that round hole, this podcast is for you. I’m starting a revolution of unconventional business unicorns, and you’re invited. Let’s build the businesses of our dreams exactly how we want to.
Today’s episode is brought to you by my Inner Circle community and I just have to share something that one of my Inner Circle members just wrote about the community. This is from Suzy and here’s what she has to say, “If you’re not in the Inner Circle, I’ll pray for you (smiley face). No, seriously, if you’re looking to up your game, whether that’s in blogging, podcasting, online marketing, or something else, or you’re just getting started and need some feedback that goes beyond posting in this group, you must join the Inner Circle. You can join for the price of well, way less than a pedicure. Didn’t want to go there with a coffee, we need our morning java, no? I’m in level two and I chose that tier for two reasons. Level three isn’t in the budget yet. And number two, I wanted that 30-minute one-on-one time with Taylor that I’ll get after three months of membership. Did you know that for every three months you’re in level two, you get your own personal session with Taylor? It’s so affordable, and so worth it. And that $75 three months of tier two at $25 is less than Taylor charges for a one-on-one session if you hire her a la carte. If it’s merely a money issue, you’ll want to figure out a way to make it happen. Just do. We spend money on what’s important to us. The inner circle is important to me and it’s not just a membership, y’all. Our monthly talks themselves, make it worth the price of admission. If you’re serious about your business, you really owe it to yourself to join the Inner Circle. See you and there soon.” Suzy, thank you so much for that sweet and kind review of the Inner Circle. You guys, this is where I’m hanging out. This is where you can have more access to me and there are three levels of membership. Level One is $10 a month. That gets you access into the Inner Circle. Pop over to bossgirlcreative.com/InnerCircle to join today.
Hey, welcome to episode number 273. I’m your host, Taylor Bradford. Thank you so much for tuning in to today. It’s all about wanting to launch a new idea whether that means it’s a brand-new business idea or it’s a new umbrella under your existing business. That’s what we’re talking about today and I’m actually really excited because I get to announce a brand-new umbrella to one of my businesses. It launches today, September 1st, however, you guys will listen to this episode, most likely around September 2nd, but at least the first week of September, hopefully. We’re in 2020. And I’m just really excited. This is something that has been brewing for a while. And it’s not it’s not been an easy thing to build out because there’s a lot of moving pieces that I’ve never had to figure out and I’m still figuring out so I kind of have a bandaid on it, which I’m glad I have a full month until the actual subscription actually starts which is in October. So this is for my local DFW small business owners and influencers and bloggers. So if you’re in my market if you’re in the Metroplex DFW then you can totally take advantage of this brand new exciting thing that I am launching which is called the S.O.C.I.A.L. Subscription. And it is a three month membership where you get two 15 minute photoshoots a month every month for three months you can renew however often you want to renew. This subscription is to help you keep your social media and marketing content fresh, because let’s face it, putting our face out in front of our brands, having our own branded materials is super important. It is what changes the game. And that is what the S.O.C.I.A.L. Subscription is all about. And the beauty of the S.O.C.I.A.L. Subscription is that it is an inkling of what an actual branding photoshoot would cost. If you were to do just a traditional branding photoshoot which I’ve done many times I know what they cost, and I am offering you the S.O.C.I.A.L. Subscription at a fraction of a cost for a branding photoshoot. Plus, you get content created for you every single month like you show up to get content taken for you. A photographer approach At that Jamie Brogdon is on board with this project for me She is one of my personal photographers. So I’m really, really excited about this. So let me tell you what the key difference and how we are keeping our costs down so that you can constantly have fresh content. It is all about the fact that you will have full licensing rights, full rights to your photos, straight out of the camera basically, and delivered to your inbox within 48 hours so that you can make whatever edits you want to make. Whatever filters you want to put on them. If your Instagram feed has a pink tint to it, girl go for it like go ahead and put that pink tint put that pink filter on. You are going to be able to edit these photos however you choose. Now do not get me wrong and do not do not miss interpret. These photos will be able to be Used as soon as they’re delivered to you, as is they will already be beautifully crafted for you because of the experience of the photographer. What I’m saying is she’s just not going to spend hours fine tuning your face or whatever whatever typically happens in a photography edit, she is just going to make sure there are beautiful photos so that they’re usable as is and then you get the opportunity if you want to make further edits, or put your favorite filters on them, you will have free reign to do that. So your photoshoots the main subscription is twice a month photoshoots 15 minutes and our photoshoots are going to be in the studio at Sugar Creek for the most part. So the first week of the month is just using the studio as is the third week of the month will be a style then yet in the odd months. I know This is super confusing. It is all on the website which is brand new for the studio by the way, that’s the other big thing. Studio.SugarCreekEventRentals.com you can see it all you can see all about the S.O.C.I.A.L. Subscription. Yes it is all there studio.SugarCreekEventRentals.com. So you have your photoshoot 15 minutes, first week, 15 minutes third week or you can do depending on your schedule, you can do a back to back 30 minutes, you can use a subscription how you want to for your brand, that’s the whole entire point. So you have constantly fresh content, she can shoot flatlays for you she can shoot branded content for you she can shoot outfit photos if you need that. This time is for your brand and is to keep your content fresh. So popover studio dot Sugar Creek Event rentals.com to learn all about the S.O.C.I.A.L. Subscription. There’s two options you can have two photoshoots a month or four photoshoots a month. You can use the time how you see But like I said, first week is just studio time, third week of the month, in the odd months is a style vignette. And in even months, in the third week, we will be on location in Fort Worth, at a graffiti wall, in a park, at a coffee shop, so that the content is constantly changing and evolving, because that’s how our brands constantly change and evolve. So I’m excited. I hope you’re excited. Go check out the S.O.C.I.A.L. Subscription. Okay, so the whole purpose of me announcing the S.O.C.I.A.L. Subscription is because it is a new adventure for me and Sugar Creek. And this studio is a brand new adventure for me and Sugar Creek and getting that all set up and kind of what that is entailed and all of these moving parts and that’s kind of what formulated me talking about launching a new idea like what are the steps that you need to take so that you can launch a new idea and I’m gonna walk you through.
So the first step that you need to figure out is you’ve got to create a plan for what it is that you want to bring to existence. You can’t just be willy-nilly about things. And while in the beginning of my blogging career, that’s kind of how it was like there was no business of blogging back then. So you just kind of did it and hope for the best. It is really, really important to create a plan. So I’ve been working on this idea for a really long time actually hosted some boss babe sessions in my studio a few weeks ago so that I would have content to start marketing and then kind of like putting some feelers and teasers out there about something big announcing today. You have to have a plan. You can’t do this without a plan. So that’s step one.
Step two, is you got to fill out your customers. So we did a branding photoshoot session a boss babe session back in 2017. In a nutshell, it was just a group of us that affected Her friend was like, Hey, I rented this photo studio. And I thought it was gonna be big enough for my daughter’s birthday party, but it is not. And so I have it, I have this studio rental time. Do you guys want to do a headshot session? And so we did. And it turned out to be this super cool thing. And I knew as I was building my warehouse, that I was going to be building a petite studio in my warehouse, for multiple reasons, one reason to shoot my own inventory in a beautiful space, but also to host intimate events. That’s why I call it a petite studio. And I knew I wanted to be able to rent out my studio, but I also wanted to be able to host other things. I wanted to create something that would be really magical. That doesn’t really exist in our market. And there’s a ton of photo studios. So how am I going to set myself apart so I knew how much Excitement there was back in 2017 around having a Boss Babes headshot day. And so I recreated that with the same photographer and sent it out to some friends. And I had two days of basically branding photoshoot sessions in my studio, where they had access to a sofa, and a standing desktop and just some props that they could use to create content for their brands. And while they were there, or while they were prepping for their appointment, I had a conversation about what I was going to be doing this S.O.C.I.A.L. Subscription. And I wanted to feel out like, is this something that people would be interested in? And it was a resounding yes. So I immediately got to work on figuring out what photographer would be really good at this partnership and all of that. And basically, that’s kind of where the S.O.C.I.A.L. subscription kind of was born.
Step number three: pre-launch landing page and or a sales page. They’re kind of the same thing. And so I ended up creating originally the studio just kind of lived in the navigation bar on Sugar Creek Event Rentals. And it was kind of a landing page, but not really it kind of showed you how you could rent a studio. But there really wasn’t an actual process. And so I decided to create a subdomain to Sugar Creek Event Rentals because the studio is inside my warehouse at Sugar Creek. And so I went with studio.SugarCreekEventRentals.com. And I’ve been working on this without announcing that that subdomain existed. I didn’t change anything with the studio and what I was putting out on social media. So the studio has its own Instagram and its own Facebook page. But it’s still linked to the main Sugar Creek website and the content that was already there. So I didn’t tell anybody that there was this new website being built. So to get gave me the opportunity to build it without anybody like seeing what I was doing. So the studio has a page, I have a fact page, I have all the things you can actually reserve the studio through the website. But this is also where the S.O.C.I.A.L. Subscription lives. And I had to build out a mega landing page for it. And that just took a lot of time to build that out, to be honest. But I got it, it’s there. So pre-launch landing page. That is what I will send people to effective today. They can go to the studio’s website, but I want them going to the S.O.C.I.A.L. Subscriptions landing page so that they can learn all about this opportunity. And they can actually reserve their membership because the memberships don’t actually start until October. So I’m giving myself a full month to drive traffic to get subscriptions and then get going with the subscription moving forward, which has been an interesting thing to figure out because most software’s that I have tested to try to figure out okay, what’s the workflow behind the scenes and most of them have recurring payments that you can set up but I knew I needed a way to reserve and take somebody’s money but not charge them until the subscription actually started because I don’t want to charge somebody three months of a price when they would be a month behind and receiving that service. Like that’s just not right. So I ended up currently and I’m probably will change this because this morning, I kind of had an epiphany after I slept on it after I did it and I was like, oh, maybe I should just do it that way. But right now I’ve got a MailChimp landing page. So you get to my actual sales page, you click a button that says reserve it takes you to a MailChimp landing page where you can actually buy a subscription to reserve your spot and it’s a little clunky, it is not the tailor feel like I’m not 100% with it. We’ll work until I can figure out some better tools. But so I’m using a MailChimp landing page, it connects to my square account, I was really disappointed between MailChimp and square. Honestly, I had a conversation at like 1130 last night with MailChimp, thank you to their chat functionality being awake. And so it’s not really doing what I want it to do. So I kind of had to limp it, which I don’t like to do and so it’s not as professional-looking as I wanted it to be. But I will fix it and it will be okay. But the main thing is because I have this one month gap, and that’s really what I’m having to limp. Once the subscription starts. Everything will roll and be like clockwork exactly how I want it to. So it’s important step three, pre launch, landing page sales page, collect people’s email addresses, get them hyped up for me and that’s the part that’s missing is I’m not collecting their email address. I’m just collected reservations and so I’ve got to figure out a way to collect an email address as Well, I mean I am but they have to reserve. And so that’s the little bit tricky part.
Step four is considering freebies, whether that be a download on your sales page or a cheat sheet or something on your sales page. There’s really not anything that right now like for my launch that I could have created. Although now that I’m speaking out loud about this, I could absolutely put together a PDF on how to make the most out of your sessions. And so that’s probably what I will do. So making a note to myself. Okay, so I just made that note because I think that’s brilliant. Hmm.
Okay, number five, hosting or sharing a contest to win something. So I plan on giving away three memberships to S.O.C.I.A.L. Subscription through a sharing contest through a referral contest. So that is what I will be doing in order to ramp this up. I will be offering three, three months subscriptions to S.O.C.I.A.L. Subscription. So I do consider hosting some kind of a contest super important in a launch and giveaways. There’s a lot of legalities with giveaways. And while you can host them on your website and do them legally, it’s really hard to do that on on social media. And so you can host a contest, which is not a giveaway or a contest that basically allows you to do that same thing. So I will be hosting a contest to win something to help bring eyeballs to the S.O.C.I.A.L. Subscription.
Step number six, another great opportunity that you can do is connect with industry influencers but only do this if you actually have friends that are industry influencers like this doesn’t work if they are they know nothing about you, you don’t have a relationship with them. But if you have relationships with influencers with industry influencers, and I’m not meaning like bloggers per se, but like if you have photography friends that this makes sense for and you ask To share about it, like that’s an influencer for you. So connect with industry influencers, people you’ve already got a relationship with, ask them to share about it ask them to share review about working with you in the past if they have asked them to just help you spread the word, and I promise you they will especially if you have that relationship with them, you might have to promise them something. Sometimes that’s just how the world works. And maybe you give them something in return, but connecting with people that you already have relationships with to help you sell the thing that you’re trying to launch is is super important.
Number seven share sneak peeks and teasers which is what I have been doing on the studio’s Instagram and Facebook Like I have been like, hey, countdown is on. X amount of days before this super-secret cool announcement is happening and I’ve been sharing that out through the Sugar Creek Instagram and my personal Instagram and my Boss Girl Creative Instagram, because I have a lot of different platforms that I can utilize. And it’s been really great to share these sneak peeks to get some people like Oh, I can’t wait to mark my calendar
number eight, email your list, because Hello, you already have your email list. Most likely you’ve already gotten an email list people that you’ve already built a like know and trust factor with. If you have a Facebook group like these are great places for you to make these announcements. So don’t forget to email your existing people.
Number nine blog about it and blog about it and blog about it and blogged about it. Like use your blog to help spread the word
number 10. Share out on social media, like create a plan of how you’re going to share use your Instagram stories, do a facebook live like those are all things get a Pinterest pin going create an ad like all of these things, get it out on social media so that you You can hit the ground running when you’re actually launching.
Number 11. shamelessly share this with your family and friends like seriously, they probably know people that would be the perfect fit for the thing that you’re selling and why not let them know about it. Let them be your cheerleaders as well.
Number 12 choose to launch midweek, it’s not really smart to launch on a Friday and it’s really not smart to launch on a Monday. Everybody just like either zeroed in on the weekend or trying to recoup from the weekend. So Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday is a really great time to launch something. Which is also why the podcast comes out on a Wednesday
number Oh, let’s see 13 number 13. Create FOMO Yes, fear of missing out by limiting your quantities of the things that you might be selling or the services you might be offering. I am considering this in the first round of launches because that makes it so scarcity mindset, which can be a pretty powerful tool when used properly.
Number 14. Okay, now you, you’ve done all these things. Now it’s time for your pre promo work. Your pre promo work to your actual launch is the two to four weeks out from the thing actually being functional being live a living, breathing thing. What are you going to do leading up to your actual launch? That’s what you’ve got to come up with, what is your plan. And then when you’re at launch week, so my very first week of launch week is actually the week before we bring this S.O.C.I.A.L. Subscription to life because the S.O.C.I.A.L. Subscription starts the first week of October in my studio. So I have to have a really strong launch plan in place for that week, which is where probably all of the people, the three S.O.C.I.A.L. Subscription that I will be giving away and I will, who knows what I will do. I’m still working on all of that and then the last step is also important is to do follow-ups and get people involved in what it is that you just created. Constantly communicate to them. Like, don’t be obnoxious, but communicate to them like, Did you meet your goal? If you have a goal of selling the thing out, or there’s a scarce amount did you reach that, like people are curious, once you create a new thing, people are just curious by nature. So keep them along for the ride. Maybe they’re not the right fit right now. But maybe they’re the right fit in the future. And so it’s time to nurture them moving forward. So I hope that checklist helps you create a plan for a thing that you want to launch a new idea, a new business, create a plan that is so incredibly important, but I hope this checklist gives you some food for thought on what it’s like to bring an idea from Is springing up in your brain to fully in existence.
So, save this episode, go back to it, there will be show notes there will be a transcript for this episode number 273. Thank you so much for listening to today’s episode. I’m super excited about the S.O.C.I.A.L. Subscription. I think it’s a game changer, and especially an affordable game changer. That’s the whole point we have to stay ahead of the curve and what better way to do that than to have our own branded content. I mean, come on your Instagram BFF or your Instagram boyfriend or your Instagram husband is probably tired of helping you out. And so now you have an option to take that place. And you know what selfies. Yeah, they’re kind of the thing of the past. They’re more reserved for your Instagram stories.
