When that email popped into my inbox, however many weeks ago that was, that was a saving grace for me. For somebody that is kind of a control freak, kind of has to be in control of all situations, and not being in control with COVID-19 because everything was out of control. There was no normal anymore, and it was terrifying. And that’s where Better Help came in and helped me. Saved my mind. Because I was struggling hardcore. I can’t do everything by myself, and when I am that paralyzed by anxiety, it makes it really hard to just want to do anything. And that is so unlike me, and I’m the type of person that I just push through anything and everything. I’ve experienced a lot of loss in life. And COVID-19 pushed me over the edge, and I needed help. And I was not shameful about asking for it because I can’t run my businesses, I can’t move my businesses forward, without being 100% and Better Help legitimately helped me, and it can help you too. trybetterhelp.com/bossgirl
Hey, welcome to Episode 263 of the Boss Girl Creative Podcast. I am your host, Taylor Bradford. Thank you so much for tuning in to this episode, which is all about staying prepared in business. I have had the opportunity to listen to a lot of podcasts over the weekend, which really I don’t know like just not being in my car because of COVID and not driving around places has really diminished my podcast listening which I’ve also noticed has happened with Boss Girl Creative just by looking at the download numbers during COVID. And I totally understand when people aren’t commuting, people aren’t listening. And so listenership has been down, including my own listenership of other podcasts that I listened to. And so I was able to catch up over the weekend because I went home. I actually went home to pick up some chairs, but also hang out with my dad for Father’s Day, which was really great, because we’re starting this YouTube channel and because Sugar Creek, the namesake, is around my family’s land, the homestead land in Arkansas, I wanted to get some footage of that Creek. And so I was able to do that which was really amazing. And y’all I can’t wait to be able to start talking about YouTube as I experience it and dive into it and what I learned and just another level of me being able to teach through my own experiences, which is what this is all about. So I appreciate you following along on my business journeys because that’s basically what Boss Girl Creative is, is my own business journeys and you along for the ride. So thank you so much for pressing play and being on this journey with me.
And one of those podcast episodes and right now, I listened to so many because the drives pretty long. So I can’t remember which episode this was where I heard a guest talk about listening to Alex Rodriguez, the baseball player, A-Rod as he’s known, Jennifer Lopez’s fiance, listening to one of his talks, and I didn’t know Alex Rodriguez was a speaker, but yay for him. That’s awesome. But he talked about staying warm and staying prepared. And his actual talk was how to be limitless in a limited world. And it really makes a lot of sense with COVID because basically, he’s saying COVID is this big rain delay, but you know what, the game’s not over and we have to stay prepared, and we have to stay warm. And what he talks about, and I went and found some tidbits from his talk, since I haven’t actually heard it in person, and it was relayed through this podcast, and so I really want to do the best to relay what it’s all about. But what he says is, “Find focus and uncertainty by building skills and taking care of yourself and your team. The importance of staying prepared is literally the most important thing in times of uncertainty.” And he relates this back to a rain delay in baseball. And a rain delay can be 30 minutes, it can be an hour, it can be two hours, three hours, four hours, it can be a super long time. And basically, what he attributes to rain delays is that champions are made in the times of uncertainty. And how he explains this is when we have rain delays and baseball the guys that stay suited up in their uniforms, in their cleats, and either get on the treadmill, get on the bike. The guys that are conditioned to stay warm during the times of rain delays are the champions. They become the champions. They become the guys that stay around longer in baseball because they are constantly staying prepared, constantly keeping their bodies warm for baseball. The guys that take off their uniform, take off their shoes, sit on the couch, watch TV, eat greasy hamburgers, those are the guys that don’t make it very long in the pros.
And hearing him, via this podcast, and then also going and finding some bullets on his talk about how to be limitless in a limited world, makes so much sense, especially since he’s now relating it to COVID and COVID being this gigantic rain delay, and what are we going to do during this delay? What are we doing? What will we be doing? Because it’s not over. The game is not over. Life isn’t over. Business isn’t over. And so I want to talk about how can we continue to stay prepared, continue to stay warm so that when we are able to get back to whatever the normal is going to be, we are right there with an even better, stronger business than when COVID first started. Staying prepared in business is what makes your business last. That is so incredibly important.
So how do we even do that? How do we walk through these uncertain times and come out on the other side, a champion? How do we come out on the other side as a stronger business? It all starts with us. It all starts with what we’re doing to take care of ourselves and to take care of our businesses. So, number one, we’ve got to self-care. We have to take care of ourselves, which is why I talk about Better Help, and how it has helped me and how it has helped me literally work through my anxiety of the unknown, and to really kind of just take that back off my shoulder because it was crushing me. And I was able to talk with a counselor to help me work through all that anxiety and that unknown. And there’s still a lot of unknown, but now I have tools to help me work through that. And if you need those tools, I’m going to encourage you to try Better Help. That’s trybetterhelp.com/bossgirl. There is nothing wrong with asking for help, and self-care in times of uncertainty is one of the most important things you can do for yourself and your business.
Also, structuring your days. So I can have squirrel moments. I’ve talked about this in the past on the podcast. I am running so many different things, and so many different businesses and my focus can be pulled in so many different directions if I don’t give myself structure, and I’ve tested out the Pomodoro Technique, I’ve tested out time blocking strategies. And I’ve kind of got a hybrid of those things currently that are helping me to keep structure to my days, if I didn’t have that I would be all over the place. So it’s important for you to figure out structure, how can you keep structure to your day, especially in times of uncertainty? Also, optimizing your environment to limit your distractions? Where can you work that you’re going to be less distracted? What does your workspace look like? What chair Are you sitting in? What window do you get to look at? Like, how can you structure your environment so that it optimizes it for the least amount of distraction and allows you to retain your focus? You also are going to need to eliminate your digital distractions. And I think that’s probably one of my biggest problems is I’m still doing most of everything in my business. And so Instagram notifications are popping up on my phone all of the time. I might get MarcoPolos from my friends, I have my inbox constantly dinging, and those kinds of things can turn into squirrel moments for me if I’m not careful. So I have to keep that structure, and I have to reduce as many digital distractions as I possibly can or eliminate them altogether. And then you also have to focus on figuring out how to create positive things for yourself and embrace everything positive that happens in moments like these because that’s Also mindset. Being able to write in a gratitude journal, being able to find a positive in a negative situation is going to help you stay warm and stay prepared in times of uncertainty and times of where you feel like you aren’t in control of things. So how do you work forward? How do you continue to do these things? Once you’ve got all of that figured out? If you still have an inkling that you’re in control, let me tell you, you got to let that go. You’ve got to let go of an illusion of control because you can’t control what happens in the future or what happens in six hours. You’ve got to work at staying in the moment right now, and focusing on the moment right now, what can you do right now and then what can you do in five minutes? You’re going to think about what can I do right now? So lose that illusion of control because let me tell you, COVID has taken that away. And as much as I want to be in control, it is not something that’s attainable, because of all the uncertainty. I mean, right now in DFW with related to weddings, the city of Dallas, and actually, the county of Dallas has issued a new order that is requiring all businesses to require face masks of their patrons and their employees. And do you know how hard that’s going to be for weddings? And there, the order is written in a way that’s super vague about a wedding. And so there’s all this uncertainty, and there’s major spikes in COVID right now because people are gathering again, and I just saw a photographer who was at a wedding who photographed her bride’s wedding this past weekend and the bride on Monday emailed her and said, Hey, just FYI, you’ve been exposed. A groomsman has been tested positive for COVID. And also, some guests have been taught tested positive for COVID. So I just want you to know you have been exposed or you have potentially been exposed. So now, this photography vendor is freaking out. She’s ten weeks pregnant, and she has to go get tested for COVID. And whether or not she’s been exposed, and so she’s also had to email her upcoming brides and say, I’ve potentially been exposed. Now in her specific situation, she can have an associate photographer go out and shoot the weddings that she’s got on the books. But y’all, this is how we make money. This is how our businesses are run. And people in weddings right now are being so incredibly careless about Corona and COVID. And oh, it’s just like, even more unknowns, even more unknowns.
You’ve got to accept reality as it is right now. And I think that’s probably the hardest part if you are a control freak like me is accepting reality as it is right now. Because our normal what it was, we’ll never be that again. Or it won’t be for a really long time. And so working to accept reality as it is, it’s going to be something that benefits you. Also, knowing what you can and can’t change, super important. Knowing what you can and can’t change. You can’t change the fact that COVID still exists. I’m sorry, you can’t. I can’t; nobody can. But know what you can change. You can change your mindset. You can eliminate those distractions. You can set yourself up for success and not failure. You’ve got to stop worrying about what might happen because we can all go down those rabbit holes, and they are scary. What might happen? Well, this could happen. You’ve got to stop those trains of thought. And if you need help doing that, again, I’m going to point you to Better Help. trybetterhelp.com/bossgirl. You can’t worry about what might happen. You’ve got to shift your focus about what’s going on right now that you can work through and work towards. That means changing your mindset. That means restating your goals. That means focusing on solutions and not problems. If you can manage that, if you can reset your mindset, find positive in the negative, if you can restate your goals so that they are top of mind, which is what I’ve been doing for the inner circle if you’re not in the inner circle, and you need that extra boost in that extra hand-holding and that extra access to me, for me to help you work. Through your business and keep your business moving forward.
I’m going to encourage you to go get yourself into the Inner Circle, bossgirlcreative.com/innercircle. Change your mindset. Find the positive, write in your gratitude journal, restate your goals so that you know what you are working towards what you are working for. Focusing on the solutions and not dwelling in the problems. We all have problems. All of us if you could have been a fly on the wall this weekend at my dad’s house. So many problems, not with my side of the family, but with my stepmother side of the family, so many problems. And it nearly ruined my weekend spending it with my dad, but I didn’t let it I had frustration. But I didn’t let it I just switched my mindset. You know what this is? My time with my dad, nobody is going to take that away from me. Stop worrying about what might happen change your mindset. Find the positive. Restate your goals, so you know what you’re working on and focus on solutions, not problems. Keep yourself warm. The Greats are who come out of times of uncertainty. This is a time when champions are made, and you are going to be one of them.
