Episode #239: CHOOSING YOUR WORD OF THE YEAR
TAYLOR BRADFORD: You are listening to episode number 239 of the Boss Girl Creative podcast. Today I’m talking about choosing your word of the year. On to the episode.
Hey, welcome to Episode 239. I’m your host, Taylor Bradford. And yes, my voice sounds so different just because I have bronchitis right now and that is rocking my world. I can’t recall the last time I had bronchitis, and so we’re going to keep this episode short and sweet. And so that I don’t annoy you with this different voice. And we’re going to be talking about choosing your word of the year.
And before I dive into that, I do want to remind you the Inner Circle is accepting new members. There are three levels of membership within the Inner Circle. Level One is $10 a month, and it gets you into the Inner Circle, and you receive a once-a-month live Q&A. You’re able to submit your questions ahead of time, and if you’re unable to attend live, you can come back and watch the replay afterwards. Level Two gets you cool bonuses like a monthly co-working session, a Boss Girl Creative mug. Every three months that you’re subscribed at level two, you will receive a 30-minute one-on-one strategy coaching session with me, and I’m also about to launch some masterclasses and also a resource library. And if you are at Level One or Level Two, you will have noticed I started at the beginning of January, recapping my day so that you could see a behind the scenes look at how I function day in and day out with my businesses. Level Two is $25 a month. And then Level Three is for those that are actually interested in advertising your blog or your website to the Boss Girl Creative community. I offer advertising on Boss Girl Creative’s website and through the newsletter and also through the Facebook group. So, three levels. You can enter into the Inner Circle, and lots of fun things coming up in 2020, and I’m really excited about it.
All right, let’s get talking about choosing your Word of the Year. So I know we’re in the first actual, full week of January when this episode comes out. And you may have already chosen your Word of the Year, or maybe you haven’t, and you’re still pondering that. Or maybe you’ve never chosen a word of the year, and this is something brand new that you’re hearing. I choose a word every year. Last year my word was FOCUS, the year before it was CONQUER. And this year, my word is BUILD. And those words each had really strong meaning for me in that season of life. I chose BUILD because it’s part of the season of life I’m in right now. I’m building a warehouse. I will be building home this year. And I will continue to build Boss Girl Creative, the Inner Circle, and both the Sugar Creek brands. And so everything that I’m doing that is goal-related has something to do with building business, building brands, building a home, building a warehouse. And so that word really spoke to me. When I started thinking about what is it that I’m trying to accomplish this year, I have a really big revenue goal that I want to accomplish. In order for me to get to that revenue goal, I have to keep building my businesses, and we’re building the warehouse, and we just bought land to build our home on, and so it really kind of came full-circle. When I was reading through all different kinds of words–I’m going to share some at the end–when I was reading through all sorts of kinds of words, I realize, like that’s the most perfect word for me for 2020 is BUILD.
So how do you choose your Word of the Year? I kind of think there’s a little bit of a process, but at the end of the day, if all of that is too much, I just want you to focus in on what are your goals? And is there an underlying theme related to those goals? And if not, then I would go find a bunch of lists of words that you could select and see what resonates with you. That’s the most simplest way to do this. But if you want to come down an actual process, here’s the process that might help you get to that word of the year.
So the first step is to reflect. I want you to reflect back on what you could use more of in your life. What could you use more of in your life? And I want you to reflect back on what could you use less of in your life? And then also reflect on what characteristics would you like to have? You personally and then also in your business life. What characteristics matter to you? So start by pondering and reflecting back on what you want more of, what you want less of, and what characteristics you want to grow within yourself and your businesses.
Step two is actually visualizing. And I want you to visualize in the feeling form, so I want you to feel these things, not just visualize them. How do you want to feel every single day? How do you want to feel throughout the day, like your morning routine, at the office, at home with your friends with your family? What do you want to focus on? How do you want that focus to make you feel? And then do your goals again, have a common theme? Can you feel that common theme as you’re working through your goals?
Step three is creating a list of words that resonate with you. And I want you to spend 10 to 20 minutes just jotting down words that are resonating with you. If you can’t come up with words, there are kajillion lists, just go to Pinterest and type in words of the year, and you’ll find a kajillion lists of words. I’m going to give you some, but I want you to create a list of words that actually resonate with you. Spend 10 to 20 minutes jotting them down. None of them are wrong, whatever is coming to you, free form it, and write that word down. Whatever pops into your brain. And then I want you to look at that list, and I want you to review it, and I want you to refine it down to your top three favorites, based on what you reflected on and based on what you visualized. And what three words ultimately fit into all of those things. And then ask yourself, are you interested in that word in the top three? Are you interested in that word, or are you committed to that word? So big difference. Interest is probably not going to stay around for very long. But if you can commit to that word, then you know that you’re going to have a good, solid word. That’s how I was able to choose BUILD. When I was working through what my goals are for 2020 and realizing where I’m at in my life right now, BUILD just stood out. And now I have this undercurrent theme for 2020 that with every business decision I make, there’s got to be some build that goes along with it. And so every, every time I say yes to something, it’s because it fits into that theme. It fits into the BUILD theme, my word of the year.
So here are some words that you might choose for your word of the year. There’s discover, steady, simplify, valued, trust, immerse, inspire, bravery, complete, visible, confidence, radiant, motivation, loyalty, feel, gentleness, healing, home, believe, ease, worth, adapt, emergence, courage, heard, depth, stability, accomplished, improve, capable, boldness, fullness, give, wholehearted, begin, sacred, adventure, boundaries, mindfulness space, unconditional, enlightened, build, quiet, vision, reset, clarity, forward, abundance, free, heart, family, gratitude, service, light, slow, bliss, survivor, travel, explore, cultivate, encourage, authentic, embrace, unstoppable, journey, rise, persistence, patience, aware, empower, hope, seek, joy, celebrate, growth, transformation, intention, sparkle, balance, align, start, grounded, focus, conquer.
This week on Instagram, on Monday, I posted up what my Word of the Year was, and a lot of you shared with me what your word is. And some of you shared your why behind your word, and I really appreciated that. @jennatkahn said her word of the year is GROWTH. @justbrandyou said her word of the year was BELIVE. @whatviclikes said her word of the year is CHALLENGE–to face external challenges head-on and to challenge myself to achieve my big goals. @karenmichaelschicksinger said EMPOWER is her word. @chinupprints said her Word of the Year is SHOW YOURSELF. @calypsointhecountry said her word of the year is GROW. That’s what keeps popping into her head lately. @studiosparks said their word of the year is CONSISTENT–I am taking consistent small steps and hopes of leading to a balanced life and hitting my goals. @shebold_stock said her word is BALANCE–balancing a nine to five, business, and life so that she can feel more at peace. And she said, so far, so good. I love it when you guys have a conversation with me because it’s encouraging to not only me, that you’re listening and paying attention, but it’s also encouraging to other people. And it gets the conversation going. So if you haven’t selected your word of the year, and you find one, come over to that Instagram post on Monday, first week of January, January sixth, and tell me what your Word of the Year is, if you’ve already figured it out, come over and tell me what your Word of the Year is. And if you’re comfortable sharing your why I would really like to know your why behind your Word of the Year.
Okay, so I’m gonna keep this short and sweet. My voice is about to go. And I want to say thank you so much for being a part of Boss Girl Creative. It truly means so much to me. I’m entering into, basically, almost five years in July. So we’re at four and a half years old, for the podcast and I couldn’t be here without you. And I always reflect at the end of December and into January, and it just means so much to me that you’re along this journey with me. So thank you so much from the bottom of my heart for being a loyal listener. If you’re brand new to the show, welcome. I’ve got a great big archive list ready for you to listen to or binge on through your favorite listening device. And just recently, we started doing transcripts of the show, and we’re slowly working back to Episode 150. So give us some grace to do that. It is definitely a kind of mundane task, but we’re working hard to get at least back to 150. Yes, this is Episode 239, so we do have some episodes to get back through, but bear with us, we will get them done.
Again, shout out to you guys for being awesome listeners. And again, if you want to be a part of the inner circle, which is where I’m going to put a lot of focus this year 2020, you don’t want to miss out, you don’t want to have FOMO. So get into the club, as little as $10 a month to get into the Inner Circle and find out what it’s all about and come and be a part. I would so appreciate that. And all money that is raised through the Inner Circle goes back to supporting this podcast so that I can continue putting out an episode every single week like I have for the last 239 weeks, even with bronchitis. Thank you again so much for being here, and I will catch you next week. Until then, I hope you have a great rest of your week.
