TAYLOR BRADFORD: You are listening to episode number 235 of the Boss Girl Creative podcast. Today I’m talking about mindset tips to rock 2020 onto the episode.
Today’s episode is brought to you by Gusto. If you have a business and I’m guessing you do because you’re listening to this podcast, you probably know that small business owners wear a lot of hats, especially if you’re a solopreneur. And some of those hats are totally great, but some of them like filing taxes and running payroll aren’t so great. But that’s where Gusto comes in. Gusto makes payroll taxes and HR actually easy for small businesses, fast, simple payroll processing benefits, and expert HR support all in one convenient place. Gusto automatically pays and files your federal state and local taxes, so you don’t have to worry about it. Plus, they make it easy to add on health benefits and 401ks for your team. Those old school clunky payroll providers just weren’t built for the way modern small businesses work, but Gusto is. So let them wear one of your many hats because you’ve got better things to do. Listeners of my show get three months free when they run their first payroll. Try a demo. Check it out for yourself. Go to gusto.com/bossgirl.

Alright, guys. We’re going to move into ten practical mindset tips, and this is inspired by an article that I found because I am also in this, “how do I make 2020 epic?” My word of the year is BUILD. We can talk about words of the year in the community shortly or soon because I do want to know what your word of the year is going to be for 2020 and why. But, so I’m in this place where I am trying to figure out, “how can I have this epic 2020 year?” I know that my word is BUILD. I know that there are lots of things that I’m working on building. I’m building a warehouse. I will be building a home. I am building a brand new business that’s set to launch in January of 2020. And then I want to continue building Boss Girl Creative, and Sugar Creek Event Rentals and Sugar Creek Creative, so I think it is a really good word for me in 2020. And so I’m doing the things that we all should be doing and trying to figure out how did 2019 go? What was good? What was bad? What was amazing? What was ugly? And then how do I repeat all the good stuff in 2020? And how do I keep moving forward? And then how do I get rid of the things that didn’t work in 2019? And how do I keep myself from repeating maybe the same mistakes or patterns that did not work in my favor? And so I’ve been going down these rabbit holes of trying to figure out how do I set myself up for true success in 2020? How do I take my own advice that I’ve been giving you through the last couple of podcast episodes and stumbled on this article written by Craig Ballantine, and articles over at earlytorise.com, and he’s got ten mindset tips that is going to help you and me be epic business people in 2020. And so that’s what we’re going to talk about today.
So tip number one: He says if you want to move faster, you’ve got to slow down. And he aligns this with the Navy SEALs and one of their mottos, which is “Slow is smooth, smooth is fast.” Because the SEALs, the Navy SEALs, they have to slow down in high-stress situations and be precise and smooth because their lives depend on it. Their mission depends on it. So I love this. “Slow is smooth, smooth is fast,” because we can’t just like keep going, going going, we have to slow down and take a glance back into our business in order for us to be successful. And this is a perfect analogy to that. So when you are constantly working, working, working your business, it means you are working in your business and not on your business. So you have to step back, and you have to slow down because you cannot objectively make decisions for your business if you’re stuck working in it. I need you to commit to less so that you can succeed at accomplishing more. So incredibly important.
Number two: 10x your thinking in every aspect of your life. You’ve got to throw away all of your thoughts related to what’s possible and realize you are already capable of creating what’s possible. You are far more capable than you think, then you’re giving yourself credit for. So how do you 10x your thinking? Read biographies of the greatest entrepreneurs in history. Join a mastermind full of high-achievers, those that are already 10xing everything in their life. Study top-performers who’ve already achieved similar goals that you want to achieve. I say this all the time. When I’m researching a niche, or I’m researching people that are in my field, and I want to see where they started, and I want to watch their progression through time so that I can see where their shifts actually happened. And I’ve been known to dive deep, deep, deep into people’s archives, through their blog and also on Instagram, to see where they started and how they grew. And it’s really fascinating. I have tons and tons of notebooks of writing research down because I’ve been studying people for so long. So if you are not currently doing that, I encourage you to do that. Take a look at the people that are in your niche, that are in your field, that are already where you want to be, and dive into their archives and see how they did it, how they made it happen. You won’t get a full picture, but you’ll get at least snapshots to figure out, “okay, this is when they started affiliate links, okay, this is when they started brand partnerships.” So that can be powerful for you. Use and embrace the potential you already have, and I want you to kick fear to the curb because you are capable right now to achieve big things.
Number three: It is your duty and obligation to provide your solution to the world, and I’m going to quote him because this is, is important. “Right now, somewhere in the world, someone is feeling alone, hopeless, and depressed, and crying themselves to sleep because of a problem they are facing in their life. A problem that you can help them solve. You have the solution to their biggest challenge, but they can’t get that solution because you’re too scared to offer it.” You’ve got to stop worrying about what other people are going to think. You’ve got to stop worrying about rejection and failure. And you’ve got to stop worrying about becoming a fool. Because it’s holding you back, and it’s preventing you from helping that person that I just read about. Your business, the products, and services that you create, these things aren’t about you. So stop trying to make it perfect, and just launch those things already. You can’t make money from something that’s not launched. End of story. You cannot make money without something that’s not launched. Your business has got to be about the people that you are going to help or that you do already help. So get to helping them.
Number four: Make time for what matters and GSD. If you don’t know what GSD is, I’m gonna have you go look it up because I keep this show PG. GSD “get fill-in-the-blank done.” You will never find time because it doesn’t exist unless it’s super important to you. Somehow we managed to find time for the most mundane things, like catching up on our TV shows or watching TV shows or spending time doing XYZ fill in the blank. You can only make time by assessing your values, saying no, and structuring your life around the things that are most important to you. I always say if it’s not a surefire yes, it’s got to be a no. So I want you to set your non-negotiables. Those commitments that are super important to you and I want you to get them into your calendar so that you can see them, and you don’t say no to them. So these can be things like date nights, your workouts, family time, the things that are going to propel your legacy. Maybe it’s a book that you want to write or a new product or service you want to bring into the world. Even your leisure time, the time that you’re spending on self-care. These non-negotiables have to be a priority, and you’ve got to get them into your calendar. And then once you have these non-negotiables in place, I want you to find somebody that’s going to hold you accountable to them so that you don’t skip over them so that you don’t cancel date night and you stop missing your workouts and that you stop working the 80-hours a week so that you can spend time with your family. I want you to find somebody that can hold you accountable to these non-negotiables, and I want you to create some kind of crappy consequence for yourself, something that is going to make you ill that you have to do if you fail, if you fail to do one of those non-negotiables. He gave an example of donating money to a charity that you hate. I don’t know if that is motivation enough to keep you from canceling a non-negotiable, but I want you to find somebody who can hold you accountable, and I want you to put something in place that is a crappy consequence if you fail, if you fail to do one of those non-negotiables.
Number five: I need you to set your ego aside and get objective eyes. At the end of the day, you’ve got to have a coach or a mentor or both. You have to. You need somebody that is in your corner, but it’s outside of your world that can see the big picture because, unfortunately, you’re not ever going to be able to fully see the big picture. So you’ve got to hire a coach. You can hire me, or you can hire somebody else. I do offer one-on-one coaching services, but it’s important. I have a coach right now, specifically for my specialty rental business. I have had many coaches through the years because I know how important it is to get somebody to see my businesses outside of what I can see. So that is important. To achieve lasting success, you’ve got to constantly question whether or not you are doing things the right way, and how can you fully question that and get the right answer if you’re stuck inside your business? You’ve got to be willing to do anything reasonable, that’s the key, reasonable to keep moving your business forward, even if it means a drastic overhaul of your methods and processes. If you want success, coaching isn’t merely a good idea; it’s mandatory.
Number six: You can’t do it alone. I say this time and time again. If you want next level, you’ve got to hire people. You’ve got to expand your network. You’ve got to bring on a team. Even if it’s just one person in the beginning. You’ve got to hire people, you’ve got to add people because you can’t do it alone. No matter how skilled you are, no matter how productive you are, and no matter how motivated you are, you cannot do it all by yourself. So I need you to ask this question. “Who do I need to help me do this?” instead of asking, “What do I need to do?” You’ve got to switch the question. “Who do I need to help me do this?” instead of “What do I need to do?” So who do you need on your team to take you to the next level?
Number seven: Develop your mind over matter. Here’s some truth for you. You could have all the motivation in the world, but there will still be times when you don’t feel like doing the tasks that need to be accomplished to drive results. This happens to me all the time. All the time. I can decide that I don’t want to do that thing. I would rather be reading a book. And I will. I will stop everything I’m doing, and I will go read a book. Partly because I am over compartmentalized or partly because I’m bored or partly because just fill in the blank. But there are times, like this weekend, where I sat down, and I read two books in the weekend. Two books. I have a lot of motivation, but there are still times when I just don’t feel like doing the things I should be doing. We are human, after all. And all sorts of things can influence our motivation: nutrition, sleep, anxiety, boredom. We’ve got to identify the factors that are causing us to have these mood swings or these things that are getting in our way, and we’ve got to replace those negative triggers with positive ones. We need to add meditation or work on our gratitude lists, or change our environment, listen to music. Whenever you feel like something is causing you to not feel like doing something, even with the best intention in the world, figure out what is triggering that, and let’s get it replaced with something that’s positive.
Number eight: Double down on your decisiveness. Indecision is the ultimate thief of your success. I’m not even kidding. I’m going to repeat that. Indecision is the ultimate thief of your success. Failure and poor decisions, these things are going to happen, but they can be overcomed, and they can be learned from, but not making a decision will hold you back and waste your time. I need you to embrace all the pitfalls of business; just don’t embrace indecision.
Number nine: Commit to radical alignment. If you say something, I need you to do it. End of story. If you commit to something, I need you to show up and commit. End of story. I need you to get rid of all of your misalignment in your life. If date nights are important, show up and make them happen. If family time is important, stop working overtime. If exercising is important, get to the gym. By sticking to your word, you will reduce your stress, you will reduce your anxiety and your frustration, and you will realize what is truly important in your life. Get rid of the misalignment, and I want you to commit to doing exactly what you say you’re going to do. End of story.
And finally, number 10: Express gratitude. And I mean, I want you to cultivate and express unstoppable gratitude on a daily basis. Shift your mind to focus on all of the opportunities and possibilities in life away from any negative thought. When you’re able to, to focus in on your gratitudes, you will melt your anxiety and your tension away. You will be more motivated to keep moving forward. You will look at life in a joyful way. You will be able to overcome the biggest obstacles. Express your gratitude on a daily basis.
So that’s the top 10 from his article, and I feel like you guys can nail every single one of those. We can all do this. We can all set yourself up for success in 2020. I have faith in you. I believe in you. Thank you so much for listening to today’s episode.
