#219: 6 THINGS YOU CAN TRY RIGHT NOW TO GROW YOUR FOLLOWERS

And I’m really excited today to talk to you about six ways to grow your following to take action to move forward together. Get more people’s eyeballs on your content. That’s what today’s episode is about, and it’s stuff that you’ve probably heard. But this is just a really great reminder and maybe some of it you haven’t. But that’s what we’re going to talk about today.

Let’s dive in. Let’s talk about these six things to do today, or potentially do today. I don’t want to overwhelm you with your to-do list, but six things you can do today that can help grow your following. Now, obviously, there are no guarantees, unfortunately. Used to, way back in the day when blogging really kind of started taking off, you could make a piece of content go viral. It’s really hard to do that these days. There’s just so much noise out there and algorithms working against us and yada, yada, yada. But we want to be discovered and how do we get discovered to get more followers, more people’s eyeballs on the things we’re creating? Let’s try out some of these things.
Okay, so number one is: Write great content and market it. That goes without saying. You should still be writing content on your website via a blog, and you should still be marketing said content. I recently had a coaching conversation with a client and if you look back to when I first started blogging, I was writing five days a week of content. That is not what you should be doing today. Back then there weren’t rules. You weren’t trying to blog for business. You just were blogging for yourself. It was really kind of hobby blogging. And so I kind of grew up through the way blogging has grown. And today, you should really focus on writing really great content and less, so more quality in your content versus quantity. So one to two posts a week is fine, as long as you’re really working the marketing angle. So writing a really great piece of content and marketing it is going to help you get discovered because your focus is on the quality of the content. That means you’re doing your keyword research. That means you’re listening to what your audience is telling you. You are answering your top five questions that you’re constantly getting asked. It’s the homework side. You’re spending more time on the homework side so that the content you do right is super, super, super good. That’s step one, write great content and market it. And I think that’s what we sometimes forget to do is we write it, and then we completely forget that we have to spend that time and marketing it. You’ve got probably some really great content archives. It still needs to be marketed. So writing one piece of content a week, and then go and spend time marketing it and the rest of your content.
I was listening to a podcast episode yesterday, and they were saying that 60% of their downloads every month were coming out of their back catalog. And that just means they’re back archives of content and 40% was coming out of the new content being created each week or each month. Yes, that’s how it should be. If somebody discovers you, they should be diving into your archives to see what else you have. That’s what happens with my show. Every time I release a new episode, I get eyeballs on that because my subscribers get alerted to that new piece of content, but I have also trained you that I have a new episode out every Wednesday. I try to get it in super-late Tuesday night, so that it slots in to Wednesday. And but that’s the habit. I have created 219 episodes that have been released on Wednesdays. Consistency is key. Same with writing really good content. But people that find my show are diving into my archives. That’s the power of your archives. So if you are just now getting to a point where you’re like, Okay, do the things in my archives, there’s a content that’s already there. Does it make sense with what I’m currently writing and with my current brand story? If it doesn’t, I would just turn those into draft modes, so that it doesn’t affect what your readers find. Now, if you’ve completely 180’d your content, and you’re still getting some traffic to that old stuff, you might consider keeping it if it’s not a huge stretch to what you’re currently writing about. If it is a huge stretch, and you are thinking about doing a 180 about what you’re wanting to write about or your business has shifted, I would almost consider starting over. Because let’s give an example. If you were writing about weddings, and you decided to write about food, there’s really no correlation there, I would consider starting a completely new brand. Because it doesn’t make sense why you were talking about weddings, and that’s what was driving your traffic and now all of a sudden you have food content. It doesn’t make sense. There’s no bridge to connect that. So I would consider writing a completely, or creating a completely new brand, and a new brand story and start writing that new content on the new site so that you can start beginning to build traffic to that new brand story because there’s no connection.
All right, number two: Ask your current readers your current community members to share your content. And you can do this in a non-smarmy way. Simply by asking if the person loves, for example, for the podcast, if you loved this episode and you got value out of it, I would so appreciate it if you would share it with one person who you feel would also benefit. See, that’s not smarmy. That’s me asking if you found value out of this particular episode, I would have so appreciated it if you would share it with someone else who you think would also find benefit out of it or find value out of it. You can make that ask in your own Facebook group through an Instagram story through your email newsletter. Just make sure that you tweak how you’re asking for the share. But use your existing readers use your existing community to help you out. You already have people that love what you do. Use them and give them shout outs if you think that that is part of what your brand story is. So I feel like Boss Girl Creative is going to make a little bit of a shift to be more community-focused than it already is. Because it’s important to me, it’s important to me to grow the community, for me to help you create that business that you stand behind that you want to be running that you want to be building. That’s my MO. That’s my passion. And I want to be able to support you, and if that, if I can do that through the current platform that I have, then I’m going to do that, which is where the community feature spotlight is originating from. I want to be more community-focused than I already am. So ask your current community members to share the thing that you are creating the thing that you are writing. Use your existing readers, your existing community, to help you find other like-minded people.
Number three: Pitch yourself to be on a podcast. Now, I know the power of podcasts. I don’t have a strong game of getting myself on other podcasts like I should. It’s just not been in the cards. And again, it’s not been a priority for me. But this is another way for you to get other people to see what you create. But there are a few things that you have to consider before you start going on this pitching spree of getting yourself onto podcast. The first one is doing your homework of the particular show and whether or not they even accept guest pitches. So for my show, I do not accept guest pitches. I go out and do the pitching to bring on the guests to my show. And because I’m primarily a solo show, I get pitched every day for guests to come on my show, and I respond that I’m not accepting guest pitches. So I want you to make sure that you’re doing your homework with the podcast that you find to make sure that they do accept guest pitches. And if you’re not sure, just simply ask, Are you accepting guest pitches? That’s your first question. Are you accepting guest pitches? And if they write back and say yes, then you pitch yourself for the show. But I want you to also so you’re going to go out and do your research, you’re going to go out and find some podcasts that maybe has the reader that you’d like to come over and read your content or see what you offer. You want to be on like-minded podcast, obviously. But you also want to kind of think outside of the box if you can. So if I have a story to tell, that’s part of my own brand story, but may not be exactly what I’m teaching, but I still have a story to share about that thing. I could be a guest on that podcast about that thing. And there might be somebody listening who might benefit or value from the thing that I share. So for example, I was on a wedding podcast about a year ago talking about my rental business. And that podcast episode still will randomly send people to me, they’ll reach out to me and talk to me about starting their own rental business, but then they become listeners of my show, because I do kind of incorporate what I’m learning in my own businesses into podcast episodes. And so I do get trickle listeners from those episodes where I’m not teaching how to run a rental business. That’s not what I do. But I have one, and so I’ve been on a wedding podcast, talking about my rental business and So think outside of the box when you are looking at podcast to pitch to be a part of what is your overall brand story, but what is also your personal story, think outside of the box.
Number four: Personally share your content with individuals that would directly benefit from it. So if you come up with something because one of your readers reaches out to you or one of your community members suggest a topic, when you create that piece of content or you record that piece of audio or you record that video, and you’re thinking of that person who gave you the idea for that thing, then I want you to personally email them personally reach out to them and say, “Hey, I created this piece of content answering your question and I wanted to make sure that you saw it.” I try to do that when I create episodes of the show that are coming mean from a community members idea. And so I try to follow back up with that person and say, Hey, thank you so much for this topic idea. Here is a link to the show. Share the content with individuals that would directly benefit from it. But don’t mass produce an email, don’t mass produce an email because that becomes on personal. And that’s not the goal. The goal is your true 1000 fans. The goal is to grow your audience, the goal is to get more eyeballs. And that just is going to be reciprocated. The more that people feel loved by you, though more people are willing to do things for you to help you grow. So personally share your content with individuals that would directly benefit what it is that you’re creating. Pay attention to those questions. And comments that you’re getting. And stay tuned to that so that when you are creating future content, you can go back and say, Hey, so and so I saw you talking about that thing. This would be the perfect episode for you. When I reach out to the community and say, hey, what would you like to hear on a future episode? I’m also looking to see if somebody is asking about an episode I’ve already created. So if that thing they’re asking about is something I’ve already created, I go back and say hey, check out episode this and check out episode that because I’ve already answered it. And then let me know if you have other questions around the topic.
Okay, number five, and this one is going to be scary because I know most people do not like to be in front of the camera, but that is to go live either on Facebook or Instagram or YouTube or Periscope. Wherever you want to go live. Go live. It doesn’t have to be for very long. So I used to go live every Wednesday night to the Boss Girl Creative community. And I did that for a couple of years straight, actually. And I think I maybe only missed like five times. If you’re in the Facebook group, you can go into the video tab of the group, and you can see all of the previous live things that I did in the group. And ultimately, I shut that down because of my schedule. And it just wasn’t making sense, but it is something I’m thinking about bringing back but specifically to my fans, to my super fans. And so if you’re interested in future Facebook Live, so I’m thinking about doing that a monthly Facebook Live for my super fans where they can interact with me and ask very specific questions. It’s almost like mini-coaching, but you’re not in a hot seat. It’ll be me live and you just throwing questions at me. I’m thinking about doing that in the future. If that sounds like something you want to be a part of, let me know. Email me, firstname.lastname@example.org because it is something that I do miss, but I want to be able to bring it in a different manner, in a different format. And so I’m kind of toying around with that idea. But go live either on Instagram or Facebook or periscope or YouTube, wherever your community is sitting. Go Live. Talk about the top three questions you get asked all of the time. Make it a three-part live series if you need to. Video is very, very, very smart as a strategy to growing your followers, and it’s something that I want to do more of in the future related to my Sugar Creek businesses. So really kind of excited to get my warehouse built. And so that I can work on creating a YouTube channel, specifically for Sugar Creek because I think that will be so much fun. But I want you to consider going live to your community.
Okay, number six, final thing. Number six, reach out to a media source and offer yourself as a resource to them or for them. If you’re not a part of HARO, which is Help a Reporter Out, I would definitely get on that list. You get two emails a day if you want that many, two or three emails a day if you want that many you can actually choose. And every single day, you get a list of things that reporters are looking for content related around now. Not everything is something I can reply back to. But sometimes there are questions that I feel qualified to answer, and so I will reply back nine times out of 10 I don’t know if they ever use that content, but it’s a really good way to potentially create a relationship with somebody in a media outlet. And this can be more than just help a reporter out, make contact with a media source and offer yourself as a resource that makes sense for what it is that they might actively be writing about. And if they’re just starting out, maybe they send traffic to you. And your resources are a thing that they constantly refer back to. Or as maybe they’re already established. And you just want to be providing resources to them to help them create articles or what have you. But this is also another way to get eyeballs on your content and get more followers from this kind of relationship.
